The Chameleons

The Chameleons are a highly influential guitar band from the 1980s and 1990s. They made a significant contribution to the post-punk, shoegaze and indie scenes and are often regarded as one of the most underrated bands to ever emerge from Manchester.

The band released three groundbreaking albums: the critically acclaimed ‘Script of the Bridge’ (1983), cited by many sources as a masterpiece ahead of its time, the follow-up ‘What Does Anything Mean? Basically!’ (1984) and ‘Strange Times’ (1986). Their unique sound was characterised by a mix of melancholic yet energetic and powerful melodies, hypnotic ethereal riffs and a powerful, timeless lyrical style.

The Chameleons reunited in 2021 with their surviving founding members and main writers: guitarist Reg Smithies and bassist, vocalist and lyricist Mark Burgess. There is even a brand new album planned for this year: 'Arctic Moon'.
