Mark Lanegan (born November 25, 1964 in Ellensburg, Washington) is an American rock musician and songwriter. Lanegan began his music career in the 1980s. In 1985, he became the vocalist for grunge group Screaming Trees; the group broke up in 2000. Lanegan would start a low-key solo career, but in 2004 Lanegan released his big breakthrough album Bubblegum. In addition to leading the The Gutter Twins, Lanegan has also been involved in other musical projects, including hard rock band Queens of the Stone Age, longterm collaborations with Isobel Campbell; and undertaken some surprisingly eclectic collaborations, such as co-writing and providing vocals for "Black River" by the electronic outfit, Bomb the Bass. He also lent his vocal talent to the highly regarded album, "Above", by supergroup Mad Season. Best known for his years spent as the lead singer for the Screaming Trees, Lanegan also collaborated with the Queens of the Stone Age on several of their albums and Soulsavers on their records "It's Not How Far You Fall, It's How You Land" and "Broken". His latest projects include a collaboration with the honey-voiced Isobel Campbell, as well as a long anticipated collaboration with Greg Dulli called The Gutter Twins. Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan form a unique combination of gruff vocals and dulcet voices. They have released three albums so far: Ballad of the Broken Seas, which received a nomination in the 2006 Mercury Awards, Sunday at Devil Dirt, which was released in May 2008. The album received US release in Fall 2008. And finally their third album Hawk was released in August 2010. In November 2011, Lanegan released Blues Funeral on 4AD . It was recorded in Hollywood, California by Alain Johannes at his 11ad studio. The music was played by Johannes and Jack Irons with appearances from Greg Dulli, Josh Homme et al. When they were recording the Blues Funeral album Johannes was producing an album called Shackles by Finnish singer Manna, the former wife of HIM guitarist Linde] and little sister of Smack guitarist Rane Raitsikka. Lanegan sang a duet with Manna on the song "Wishing Well". In 2013, Lanegan teamed up with Seattle producer Martin Feveyear, to work on a covers record, entitled, "Imitations." It featured reimagined versions of songs by Andy Williams, John Barry, Frank Sinatra, and many other classics. Until now, he has only issued one previous record of covers, 1999's I'll Take Care of You. On Imitations, Lanegan offers contemporary songs, standards, and obscure numbers that, according to him, reveal the effect his parents' record collection had on him. The arrangements are unique, song to song. He enlisted the help of Seattle composer Andrew Joslyn for the string arrangements and performances, as well as Seattle rock icons Duff McKagan, Barrett Martin, and others to help flesh out the music. The record was released September 17, 2013 through Vagrant Records. Phantom Radio, released on October 21, 2014 on Vagrant Records, is the ninth studio album by Lanegan, performed as the "Mark Lanegan Band". It was In an interview with The Quietus, Lanegan stated that he used a phone app called FunkBox to write the drum parts on some of the songs.
