Circle Jerks formed in 1979 in the vibrant punk scene of LA’s South Bay. After his time with Black Flag, where he sang the legendary “Nervous Breakdown,” Keith Morris formed the band with Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson, bassist Roger Rogerson, and drummer Lucky Lehrer. Circle Jerks produced music that was fierce, sharp, and energetic, with lyrics that were both ironic and thoughtful.

The band quickly became an undeniable force in punk, with legendary performances at LA’s Olympic Auditorium and cult classics like “Decline of Western Civilization” and “Repo Man.” Over the years, Circle Jerks released six influential albums and were a pioneer in the alternative music movement of the 80s and 90s. Morris later fronted bands like OFF! and FLAG, while Hetson played guitar for Bad Religion.

Negative Approach

Negative Approach from Detroit is one of the most influential hardcore bands of the early '80s. Frontman John Brannon formed the band in 1981 with drummer OP Moore and brothers Rob and Graham McCulloch. They became known for their hard, aggressive music, stripped of any frills. After the band split in 1985, Brannon continued with Laughing Hyenas. While they didn’t achieve the same fame as hardcore icons like Minor Threat or Black Flag, Negative Approach had a huge impact on the scene. Bands like Poison Idea, Sonic Youth, and Los Crudos were heavily influenced by them. With their raw mix of drums and guitar, Negative Approach remains one of the essential hardcore bands.
